In the matsumurae group, Sumi nagashi is a large leafed type and one of the best red forms. Deeply divided leaves with red petioles.
Spring color is a bright purple-red, darkens to a deep maroon or black-red in early summer. Gradually becomes a deep green or brown-red in summer. Afternoon shade helps the leaf color develop in Spring. Fall colors are crimson.
Vigorous and strong growing up to 18 feet tall.
